Amara has worked in the mission-driven sector for over two decades.
A founding board member, executive director, development director, intern, and lots in between, she's familiar with the ups and downs boards and staff encounter as they work together to effect positive change in our world. She earned her Certificate in Fundraising Management from the University of Washington in 2001 in order to support the excellent work her colleagues were doing to bring justice and compassion to the world.
Over the course of her nonprofit work she’s raised funds through grants, individual giving, corporate sponsorships, and events, and was responsible for leveraging the largest legacy gift in an organization’s history. She’s also shifted the giving and philanthropic culture in the organizations she’s worked with, tripling individual giving and quadrupling board support.
She grew up overseas, including Cote d'Ivoire and Mexico, and as the fortunate result speaks French and Spanish fluently. As a transracial adoptive mama, she's become personally invested in understanding her role as a privileged person in our society and leveraging it to support marginalized communities. She is pursuing a Master's Degree in Divinity from Seattle University's School of Theology and Ministry. She loves kitchen dancing with her kids, sinking her knife into a new recipe, and never turns down chocolate.
